SOS Tutoring and Mentoring seeks to provide in person tutoring and mentoring services to familes in need.
Covid and distance learning are widening the already large gap in educational opportunities. Students desperately need help and guidance.
We have initiated a pilot program in partnership with Real Life Ministries in Memphis, TN.
-Current and former teachers and educators are providing in person tutoring sessions. This face to face interaction is important and something that the students need on many levels.
-We are providing necessary supplies and equipment to children and their families.
-Family involvement is a key component and goal of the program.
We hope to quickly open the program to more students in need in Memphis and expand to other cities as well. Future goals include providing specialized tutors for individual subjects, "grants" for online tutoring services to supplement the in person program, and college counseling as many families aren't aware of the grants and programs they may be able to utilize.
Background:
Drew, Josh, Ryan, and Laurie Karchmer began tutoring over 10 years ago at the Lester Community Center in Memphis, TN under Lester's supervisor, Walter Casey.
We saw first hand the dire need for educational and mentoring assistance in our most disadvantaged communities and passionately believe that education and a safe and stable home environment provides the clearest path to breaking the cycle of poverty in these communities.
